The Advantages + Challenges: Villa Weddings
In this post, I’ll provide the pros (+) and challenges (-) of private villa wedding venues to help you decide if this may be a good fit for you.
Having the space entirely to yourselves is one of the most valued advantages of utilizing a villa for your wedding venue. From the moments guests arrive on site until the moment they depart your event, the service and celebration is for your group only. This creates a feeling of luxurious exclusivity.
If you hold a part of your wedding on the beach at a villa, then the beach may be the exception. If the beach is public or accessible by passers-by, you won’t have that guaranteed privacy.
Wow Factor +
There’s so much talk of incorporating a WOW factor into your wedding day. What does that mean exactly? A WOW factor simply refers to something that surprises and enchants guests. They will also talk about your celebration for years to come!
At some events the WOW factor is an elaborate floral installation, at others it is a customized ice sculpture or a special guest appearance by an authentic Mexican donkey! The actual WOW element depends entirely on the couple.
What I love about a private villa venue is that the venue itself becomes a WOW factor!
When you say I Do at a hotel wedding, your guests may witness the process of the wedding production throughout the day. When they arrive for the event, they are wowed, but perhaps not WOWed. Make sense?
When guests arrive to a private villa venue just before the event is to begin, they are welcomed into a new and exciting wedding wonderland.
Worried that holding your welcome party or rehearsal dinner at the same villa will decrease the wedding day WOW factor? Don’t be.
The transformation that happens to a villa on a well-designed wedding day (all while guests float in their hotel pool) equates to the Before and After of my 12-year-old’s bedroom after a day-long cleaning spree. In one word – Unrecognizable.
Food Quality and Options +
Alongside privacy, food quality/option is another primary reason that some couples prefer a private villa for their wedding venue. A plethora of catering options exists around Banderas Bay where Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita and Punta Mita are scattered. Selecting a company that offers an enticing menu and the level of quality that aligns with your taste and standards is simple. From classic surf and turf to traditional Mexican, upscale gourmet to laid-back family style, your dining options for an event at a private villa venue are endless!
Freedom to select Vendors +
Similar to choosing your wedding caterer, when getting married at a private villa venue, you have complete freedom in selecting each of your wedding vendors – ceremony officiate, live musicians, florist, DJ, wedding planner! This freedom allows you to bring an authenticity to your wedding as you select wedding vendors and services that reflect your love story.
Noise Regulations + / –
The topic of party end time can shift between pro and con depending on the villa and its regulations. In certain areas of the Bay where villas are in close proximity, the government strictly enforces curfew as noise levels can be a nuisance to nearby properties.
Throughout the Puerto Vallarta area, the noise restriction at is most commonly set at 11pm. A wedding planner, can request a permit (and they are often granted) to extend party time for up to several hours. There are a few villas that are more isolated and allow parties later into the night without permits.
When searching for a private villa venue, make sure to ask all the questions about end time restrictions!
Convenience + / –
How you handle guest arrival and departure for your wedding celebration will determine the level convenience for guests!
To keep logistics as simple as possible for guests, I recommend providing transportation to and from the wedding. After dinner and a bit of dancing, I suggest offering an early-departure option prior to the end of the celebration.
If budget doesn’t allow for contracted transportation, provide your guests with small cards with the address of the villa and a phone number to reach. These cards can then simply be handed to a taxi driver!
Talk to your wedding planner or the villa concierge about end-of-the-night transportation to ensure that guests aren’t stuck at the villa.
Lodging Requirements / Event Fees –
Most private villas will require a minimum number of nights lodging in order to host an event on site. Depending on the time of year and individual villa policies, a minimum of 3-7 nights may be required
In addition, all private villas will charge an event fee on top of the nightly lodging fee. Although the fees vary, the most common event fee is the equivalent of one night stay at the villa. For example, if the villa rental fee is $1500 USD/night, you will be charged an additional $1500 USD as the event fee.
These fees cover wear and tear on the house and a minimal staff on site. This staff does not usually provide service during your wedding; their primary responsibility is to care for the actual property and be on site in the event of a villa-related emergency (plugged toilet, lightbulb out, etc).
When considering villa venues, always inquire about lodging requirements and applicable event fees.
